'No matter which type of presentation I conduct at a school, my main goal is to share with the students their own potential, and try to encourage them to create their own work. A big part of that is doing well in their studies, but the biggest part is believing in themselves. This might sound a little bit cliche, but it's true. I've tested it, and tried it, and been privileged to the results. Before I end any presentation, or any workshop, I let the students know that I am no one special. The only reason that I just visited with them that day was because I decided to go after my dreams. I let them know that, if they were to start that day doing the same, then there is no telling just how far they could go. As far as they wanted, I say. And more.'
'So What Is Sequential Art Anyway?'
'Sequential Art' basically means having pictures, in conjunction with words (sometimes not), that work together to tell a story, thought, idea, or concept.
Although my workshops differ with grade-level, the idea is the same; Learning how pictures can be used, in a certain type of order, to convey a story. Usually when people say 'comics', they automatically think of superheroes... but in these workshops, students learn that the 'comic' format is being used in some pretty creative ways as of late. One of the graphic novels we consider is a book written and illustrated by Art Spiegelman titled 'MAUS'. This book technically is a 'comic book', but it is the farthest thing from 'Spiderman'. In fact, it won the 'Pulitzer Prize' not too long ago.

From editorial cartoons, to illustrating books for publishing companies and individuals, this presentation covers every part of my work. Students are shown examples of these various areas while I discuss things such as; the writing process, what it's like to illustrate for someone you haven't ever met, working as a cartoonist for a newspaper, student created stories that have won state-based competitions, etc. Absolutely everything is covered!

When students leave this presentation, they will understand what it really means to work professionally as a cartoonist, illustrator, and author. We also always work in some time for drawing at the end as well!

Breathitt County High School Student, Ted Austin Hudson                                           'A Shining Example'

I would be wrong if I didn't include this example of 'student created work'. Recently I had the honor of conducting a three-day residency in Breathitt County High School (via Donna Combs; the contact who made the visit possible) where I worked with student Ted Austin Hudson. Ted has always enjoyed drawing and using those drawings together with words to tell a story (Sequential Art). He created this amazing interpretation of the Biblical story of Noah's Ark (written and illustrated by Ted). I have been working with the school to get this book published, and am happy to say that it will be soon. Ted's dedication to his craft should be inspiration to all schools, and Ms. Donna Combs' dedication to her students is the kind of teachers I am looking to work with. If this sounds at all interesting to you, please don't hesitate to contact me. My main goal is to see students succeed.

Morgan County High School Student Ethan Howell's Recent Email (abridged):

Hey Mr. Epling,

I just wanted you to know that I've been aiding students down here with writing and character concepts. We have a creative writing class here and I've never enjoyed something so much in my life. I love watching others' ideas come together. I love being able to help them with their work. I just really want you to know that I talk about you and your workshop to every artistic student that is interested in creating and sharing their own stories. I inspire to be like you. I just want you to know that you made a difference in my life. Thank you so much for that!! I hope that you can conduct another workshop in my school sometime in the near future. I hope all is well!

Your friend,

Ethan
